Israeli Military and Hamas trade Hacking Attacks

As Israeli ground forces push into Gaza to remove militant Islamic troops and missiles, hacking teams from both sides ply their trades. Reports of multiple site hacking, denial of service attacks and defacement are being reported by both camps in this struggle for Israel’s right to exist.

Israeli Attacks on Hamas

According to the The Jerusalem Post, Israeli hackers have either taken down or blocked numerous Hamas and Palestinian websites. Though several seem back up now, these included:

  •, Hamas’ official website
  • Gaza Alan

Visiting Al Qassam’s website today will reveal the screenshot taken above with the message, “This website is subjected to intense attacks“.

Hamas and Hacktivist attacks on Israel

Pro-Hamas hackers and militant Islamic hacktivist groups have targeted several military and civilian Israeli sites. Earlier this month the IDF’s Twitter page was compromised by the Syrian Electronic Army.

This week, part of Israel’s channel 10 TV was hacked by the Hamas military wing causing some viewers to see a pro-Hamas message as seen below:

And on the lighter side, Dominoes Israel  Facebook page was hacked last week with posts claiming, “Today will strike deep in Israel, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Ashkelon, Ashdod more than 2000 rockets. We’ll start at 7. Counting back towards the end of Israel … Be warned!

Which brought an Israeli response of, “Hey, please reserve a missile for me with jalapenos, green olives, extra cheese, and mushrooms. You have my address. Tell the delivery boy to activate the alarm when it is arriving, so I know to put my pants on.

It would seem that even Domino’s pizza took it light hearted, after they regained control of the page they apparently posted a picture of a Hamas militant with the caption, “You cannot defeat….The Israeli hunger for pizza!

Pro-Hamas hackers haven’t just focused on Israeli targets, a Synagogue in Philadelphia was also just hacked.

The violence and loss of life as Israel struggles against militant Islamic aggression is a tragedy. Further dividing of Israel will not bring peace, all it has done so far is to provide new rocket launching areas for militant rockets. Providing a “Two State” solution is also not the answer, as it was already tried and failed. The British Mandate for Palestine and Trans-Jordan provided a “Two State” solution (with Arab leaders blessing) in the 1920’s. With this deal Palestine was divided between Jews and Muslims with Arabs getting 80% of the land and Israel only 20%.

This did not bring peace as militant Islamists demand even more land from Israel, even though they were given 80% of the territory for Muslim Palestinians to live. The truth is, they do not want Israel’s land – they do not want Israel to exist.

As  Golda Meir once said, “Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.

Israel’s Deputy Prime Minister Shalom’s Social Media Sites Hacked – Personal E-mails Stolen?

(** Content Warning **)

Israel’s Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom’s Twitter account appears to have been hacked by a group called the Zcompany Hacking Crew.

Visitors to Minister Shalom’s Twitter page were greeted with a very modified background image. Also numerous pro-Palestine messages were posted under the minister’s account.

Also a YouTube account under his name was defaced by the same group. Only two videos were present one a ZHC video and one entitled “Free Palestine Free Gaza”.

His Facebook, also allegedly hacked was down and un-available when we checked. But from other sources Minister Shalom’s Facebook page had a “Free Palestine” image on it, and again numerous pro-Palaestine messages were posted under his name.

News of the hack was posted on the hacktivist group Anonymous Twitter feed. Along with the notice was a provocative tweet stating: “So what would happen if a certain vice prime ministers email got released to the public?”

Was just the Deputy Minister’s Social Media accounts hacked, or did they get into his personal system as well? A news report from stated that the hacker group was able to access his e-mail, contacts and documents.

They also claimed that they will publicly release them.

If this is true, then a hacker group was able to bypass Israel’s cyber defenses and gain access to Shalom’s personal system. Most likely by using some sort of Social Engineering type attack.

We will keep an eye on this story, as accessing a government leader’s personal system is a lot more damaging than just defacing or running denial of service attacks against random Israeli sites.

Israel using Air Strikes, Tweets and YouTube in the Battle Against Hamas

In response to yet another barrage of Hamas rocket attacks, Israel strikes back with targeted air strikes, but also with social media including tweets and YouTube videos!

“Since the start of the operation yesterday, IDF forces have struck 105 terror targets in the #Gaza Strip”, the Official IDF spokesperson (@IDFSpokesperson) twitter feed stated just a few minutes ago.

The IDF tweeted that over 50 rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel since yesterday, making the total rockets launched against Israel in 2012 more than 800!

Attacks against Israel by the terrorist group Hamas is not a new thing. And according to the IDF over one million Israelis are under threat of the attacks. The following map shows the different rockets that terrorists are using against Israel and the population that is within reach of the weapons:

But Israel is not defenseless against these threats. As IDF airstrikes and Naval assaults take out launch sites, their “Iron Dome” missile shield takes out incoming rockets that are aimed at populated areas. The Iron Dome is a system somewhat like the American Patriot missile batteries, but it can track and intercept smaller incoming projectiles like rockets and artillery rounds.

According to the IDF, “People in southern Israel have 15 seconds to run to shelter every time a rocket alarm sounds“, and “Tonight, more than 1 million Israelis are going to sleep in bomb shelters” but it sounds like Israel’s missile shield is performing very well as of tonight, “the Iron Dome system successfully intercepted 28 rockets fired from Gaza at major Israeli population centers.”

Israel is not just using Twitter to keep the world up to date on the defensive operation, they are also using YouTube. The following warning to Hamas was sent out about 10 hours ago:

And then an hour later a Twitter notification that Israel had eliminated Ahmed Jabari, the alleged head of Hamas Military Wing with this poster attached:

And finally a Tweet claiming a pinpoint strike on Ahmed Jabari, including a link to a YouTube video:

Of course Hamas is threatening retaliation. And I am sure Islamic cyber groups and hacktivists will get involved because of Israel’s choice to use social media. We shall see what comes of this in the days to come.

As for now, my heart goes out to all those who are suffering tonight. And as the Bible says, please pray for the Peace of Jerusalem.

Hamas Releases Cyber-spy Warning, Against Israel?

Just when you think you have heard it all. The BBC reported last week that Hamas issued a cyber warning that Israel is spying on its recruits through social networking sites. Okay, Hamas, classified as a terrorist group by Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan, and the United States is placing warnings against Israel. That is a new one. Read it for yourself at the BBC.

What is next? Will Iran issue similar warnings against the US? Wow, things are getting wierd in the cyber sphere….

What do you think?
