Cyber Arms Intelligence Report for July 13

Here is a look at what’s going on in the Cyber Security world Today:

The White House plan to safeguard cyberspace
The plan to “reduce cybersecurity vulnerabilities and improve online privacy protections” floated in June by Howard Schmidt, the Cybersecurity Coordinator and Special Assistant to the President, is comprehensive and an important step in the right direction.

Apple ranks first in surging security bug count
The number of vulnerabilities in the first half of 2010 was close to the number recorded in the whole of 2009, security notification firm Secunia reports.

Zeus Version 3 – Target Spain, Germany, UK, and USA Banks
Zbot or Zeus bots are part of crimeware toolkit which is available for cyber crime operation designed to steal user’s information and banking credentials. Zeus bot’s malicious behavior is defined by its server-side configuration file which contains all the list of targeted financial institution and online services. In earlier versions, Zeus handles this configuration file in a way that security researchers can easily manage to reverse engineer and capture the actual full configuration content. This is no longer the case for the latest Zeus bot version 3, which is already in the wild.

Project Vigilant(e)
The word on the street is that a community of undercover counter-cybercrime professionals has stepped into light after a decade of covert operations.  This group has secretly met in back alley chat rooms and exchanged information on specially secured forums.  They have supplied our law enforcement and federal agencies with intelligence, technical support, and expertise that is only gained from years in the industry. Project Vigilant, as they’re called, has been secretly working behind the scenes of the FBI, CIA, NSA and others in the ever-growing war on cybercrime.

Can Your Google Adsense Account Be Hacked?
Google Adsense is the #1 revenue sharing network that has more than 1 million publishers. However, the exact number of adsense publishers can possibly be much higher than what Google has announced. So, from the Internet Security Alliance, here’s a press release that helpfully fills in some of the details:

  1. Top-Secret cyber arms meetings? Hmmm sounds cool. I want in.

I cannot believe that the bad guys own the field in the cyber realm. More likely that their acts are just more in the open. From what I’ve been able to gather from various sources, America’s cyber capabilities are well known and much feared throughout the world.

Good to see that we’re being pro-active enough that our actions are starting to come into the light.

    • I agree Philo, and it’s about time!

Now, if we could just keep better tabs on military laptops, I would feel a whole lot better. Thousands of laptops were recently stolen for Special Operations command. Luckily, there was no sensitive information on them. Or so they say… 🙂

  2. sadly not surprising. in a case like that one has to wonder whether there wasnt some intent there. like all the Ak’s that went “missing” a few years ago in Iraq only to end up in the hands of turkish and iranian rebels….
